This course combines the opportunity to practice the various sewing techniques demonstrated at the beginning of each class and simultaneously construct the garments using the patterns completed from the pattern drafting courses or generic patterns.

The course is set up as a workshop hence it is suitable for both the beginners as well as those that are experienced. This course is suitable for beginners, those with some basic experience and those that want to refresh their basic pattern drafting techniques knowledge.

Upon completion of this course, your knowledge and apprehension of the pattern drafting techniques will give you a strong base and knowledge with which you will confidently be able to explore the more creative pattern drafting.

COURSE OUTLINE:

This course is suitable for beginners, those with some basic experience and those that want to refresh their basic pattern drafting techniques knowledge.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Class 1 ·   Intro to fabric, preparation and cutting (experienced can proceed directly to cutting)

·   Getting familiar with your sewing machine and sewing necessities

·   Practice for beginners: Parallel and circular lines

Class 2 ·   Use of fusing, lining and reinforcing tape

·   Simple seam finishes and simple darts

Class 3 Dress making (Part 1) – Western tops & long dresses
Class 4 Cont. of Dress making (Part 1) – Western tops & long dresses
Class 5 Cont. of Dress making (Part 1) – Western tops & long dresses
Class 6 Dress making (Part 2) – Collars and pockets
Class 7 Cont. of Dress making (Part 2) – Collars and pockets
Class 8 Dress making (Part 3) – Zipper, buttons and waistband
Class 9 Cont. of Dress making (Part 3) – Zipper, buttons and waistband
Class 10 Dress making (Part 4) – Sleeve plackets, cuffs, gathers and elastic
Class 11 Cont. Dress making (Part 4) – Sleeve plackets, cuffs, gathers and elastic
Class 12 GUEST SPEAKER: Diyali Sen Bhalla (see below for Diyali’s background)

MATERIALS to purchase at DIAC office:

Fabric (your chosen fabric – please only non-stretch cotton for beginners), Fusing/Interfacing if needed, Zipper and/or buttons if needed, thread (one shade darker than your chose fabric), sewing machine, one sided zipper foot, elastic thread, fabric scissors, snips (mini scissors), stitch ripper, straight pins, tape measure, straight transparent grid ruler (optional)

Pencil + eraser, Notepad

Terms and Conditions

1. Pre-registration is required for all classes and payments to be made in advance.
2. Students must attend classes they have registered for and paid for.
3. Makeup classes are provided and refunds are issued only if the art center cancels any lessons.
